Pablo Milanes Arias, the youngest of five children was born on 24 February 1943 in the eastern Cuban city of Bayamo to working-class parents. Despite his formal education, he generally credited the neighborhood bohemian musicians in his neighborhood for inspiration in his early career.
Although he supported the 1959 Cuban Revolution, he was initially targeted by Fidel’s Castro administration, which cracks down on “alternative” culture. Pablo Milanes was reportedly harassed for wearing afro hair and was sent to an agricultural labor camp in 1965.
Pablo Milanes escaped the camp and that experience did not dampen his revolutionary zeal, as he began incorporating politics into his music after such experience. Working with musicians such as Silvio Rodriguez and Noel Nicola, and under the auspices of the Castro government, he co-founded the Nuevo Trova movement. The movement sought to update traditional Cuban folk music for modern post-revolutionary society.
Pablo Milanes wrote the seminal Latin love song “Yolanda” in honor of his then-wife Yolanda Bennett, who had just given birth to their daughter Lynn. As an enduring favorite of his, the song overshadowed even his own fame.
In the context of Nueva Trova, Pablo Milanes is widely considered to be one of the closest to Cuban music’s traditional roots, while at the same time diverging from other contemporary traditions such as Brazilian music. His compositions range from chilling political hymns to inspired love songs.
